Is USAA Automobile Insurance a Good Deal?
Yes, USAA car insurance is a good option for members of USAA. At $875 per year, USAA offers the lowest average rates of the auto insurance companies we compared and ranks first in our Best Insurance survey. Additionally, they have the lowest rates for nearly every driver demographic group, except those with a prior DUI conviction.
Not only did rates play a role in USAA’s ascension to the top spot in our survey. Additionally, they received the highest marks in each of the subcategories we evaluated, including customer service, claims handling, and customer loyalty.
While USAA auto insurance has low rates and a high rating in consumer surveys, not all drivers qualify for coverage. To purchase insurance through USAA, you must be a member of the organization, which is limited to active and retired military personnel and their families.
If you’re looking for inexpensive car insurance but are not a member of USAA, you might consider Geico or State Farm. They are ranked second and third in the world for the lowest rates, respectively.
Customer Service at USAA
USAA ranks first in our survey of the Best Insurers for Customer Service. Only slightly more than 80% of their customers express complete satisfaction with their customer service. Additionally, 9% of respondents express some satisfaction with their auto insurance customer service.
USAA’s superior customer service scores put them well ahead of the other insurers we compared. State Farm auto insurance claims a runner-up spot, with 71% of customers expressing complete satisfaction with their customer service. That is still a respectable score, but it is down nine points from USAA’s.
USAA Claims Processing
USAA continues to earn high marks for claim handling, earning them another first-place finish in our survey. Around 81 percent of survey respondents report that filing a claim with USAA is extremely simple, and 74 percent are completely satisfied with the way their claim was resolved. Additionally, USAA customers express general satisfaction with claims-related communications, with 71% expressing complete satisfaction with the updates they received during the claims handling process.
While USAA continues to earn the highest marks in this category, it’s worth noting that Nationwide isn’t far behind. Nationwide customers, on average, are completely satisfied with their claims experience, providing USAA with some healthy competition.
Customer Loyalty Program at USAA
USAA’s high levels of customer satisfaction pave the way for similarly high levels of customer loyalty. Just over 76% of survey respondents indicated that they are “very likely” to renew their policy with USAA, while 15% indicated that they are “likely” to renew. USAA’s customer-first approach earns it high marks in our category of Most Likely to Recommend. 86 percent of respondents indicated that they would recommend USAA to other drivers shopping for car insurance.
Other insurers, such as State Farm, American Family, and Geico, earn high marks for customer loyalty, but they all fall short of USAA when it comes to complete customer satisfaction.
Complaints Against the USAA
Every auto insurance company, including USAA, receives at least some complaints. Despite USAA’s consistently high ratings for customer service and claims handling, some customers expressed concern about declining service or ineffective communication.
- “Very polite, but there is always an issue or misunderstanding”
- “Customer service was adequate, but managers failed to return calls and communicate effectively.”
- “CS at USAA is simply not what it once was”
- “[Customer service] is typically excellent, but COVID has made it more difficult.”

We questioned 4,806 individuals who had made a vehicle insurance claim or purchased a new auto insurance policy in the previous five years, inquiring about their car insurance firm. 252 respondents made a claim with USAA, and 141 initiated a policy with the company. These questions addressed satisfaction with the simplicity of submitting a claim, with customer service, with communication about claim status, with claim settlement, and with overall value. In general, customers who had made a claim were given more weight than those who had merely opened a policy. Additionally, we inquired if they would suggest a firm and whether they intended to renew their coverage. We utilized their replies to create our best car insurance company rankings, as well as sub rankings for the best customer service, claims management, and client loyalty, as well as this business profile.
Our Study’s Results
To get comparative insurance prices for this research, US News partnered with Quadrant Information Services to examine a report on insurance rates in all 50 states from the majority of the leading national auto insurance firms, albeit not all businesses operate in every state. Quadrant gathered publicly accessible data on automobile insurance rates that insurers publish with state regulators. Our research rates are based on profiles of male and female drivers between the ages of 25 and 35, as well as 60. The 2015 Honda Civic, the 2015 Toyota RAV4, and the 2015 Ford F-150 were utilized, with yearly mileage ranging between 6,000 and 12,000. Three levels of auto insurance coverage were employed, as well as three credit tiers: good, fair, and bad. Additionally, clean driving histories and records with one accident, one speeding infraction, and one DUI were utilized to calculate specific driver archetypes.
We calculated the typical rate for male and female drivers aged 25, 35, and 60 who drive 12,000 miles per year, have moderate coverage, decent credit, and a clean driving record. The prices shown are for comparison purposes only and should not be regarded as “average” rates offered by particular insurers. Because auto insurance prices are determined on an individual basis, your rates may vary from those shown here.
